Surveillance tapes are used for when there is a shoplifter or some kind of commotion with Armed robberies or theft, or violence. To be able to sit and watch it ALL day would be extremely boring because MOST of us citizens are not petty criminals, that shoplift, do robberies nor do violent crimes. Usually a button is pressed from the cashiers and it goes to the upstairs Management and then THEY look at the cameras/tapes and call the police…

they have people doing that, but remember most theft is in-house. and of that theft most of it is committed by the big doggs like the store manager or the security guys. the little stuff like shoplifters and regular employee theft is pretty minor in comparison
